This course takes you on an exciting journey into African history, exploring Nigerian societies and West African empires before colonial rule. You’ll discover how people governed, traded, worshipped, and built the foundations of modern Nigeria and Africa.
🔍 What You Will Learn
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Identify and describe the major non-centralised states in pre-colonial Nigeria, including the Igbo, Tiv, Idoma, Ibibio, Urhobo, and Ijaw.
- Compare the relationships between pre-colonial Nigerian societies by analysing similarities and differences among Ife and Benin, Kanem-Borno and the Hausa states, as well as the Igbo and Niger Delta.
- Explain the rise, system of government, economy, and decline of the Ghana Empire as the earliest major West African empire.
- Discuss the contributions of Sundiata Keita and Mansa Musa, and evaluate how Mali became a wealthy and influential centre of learning.
- Analyse the growth of the Songhai Empire under Sunni Ali, describe its political and economic structures, and assess the factors that led to its decline.
